MEDINA - With winter a distant memory, local farmers' markets are kicking off their summer seasons. Once again, fresh-harvested local produce, local meats and farm products will again be available in downtown Medina.
In Medina, Opening Day for the Canal Village Farmers' Market is Saturday, June 1 at 8:00AM, 127 West Center Street at West Avenue, in the heart of Historic Downtown Medina.
The market operates under the auspices of the Orleans Renaissance Group, Inc. of Medina, and will continue each Saturday through October from 8:00AM to 1:00PM.
Returning to the market on opening day will be Roberts Farm Market, Human Farms, Gardner's Gardens, Kim's Kitchen Bakery & More, Bob Renko Sausages, Baker Farm, and 810 Meadworks along with several other vendors, both new and old.
Some the products available this season will be local beef, pork, chicken, rabbit and bacon; sausage varieties, fresh eggs, local honey, numerous varieties of fresh-harvested local vegetables and berries, fresh baked goods, and much more.
"Two new vendors we have this year are The Sweet Spot and Quaking Hill Farm," said Market manager, Gail Miller. "The Sweet Spot will offer fresh baked goods, including cinnamon rolls, scones, muffins, cookies and pies. Quaking Hill Farm will offer fresh and frozen locally-raised chicken and rabbit, fresh eggs, local honey, herbs, seasonal cut flowers."
Additional vendors and community groups will rotate into the market weekly with new and different offerings. Niagara Wine Trail wineries will rotate in each week as well. Other activities are planned such as cooking demos and family-oriented events with the return of Canal Kids activities in August. Once again, patrons will also have the opportunity to sit and enjoy the market and music with picnic tables and umbrellas.
"We'll have live music again this season with new musicians rotating in every week." said Miller. "Many of the popular area musicians we had last year will be back."
Also available each week at the market will be authentic Mexican tacos and more. El Gran Burrito was previously located at Capstick's Garage on Rt. 31 east of Medina and has relocated to the market site. The taqueria has received outstanding food reviews from both Buffalo Spree and the Buffalo News.
"We're super excited about our great food offerings this year," said Miller. "We'll have some of the best authentic Mexican tacos in WNY every week. Juan Gonzalez's El Gran Burrito taqueria will be located at the market. He'll be open three days a week (Fri, Sat, Sun 11:00am - 10:00pm), including every market day."
"Bob Renko will also be back, offering his famous grilled, fresh-made local sausage and burgers, so plan on lunch at the market this summer- we'll definitely have good eats."
The market will also soon be accepting SNAP benefits.
"We've been working towards SNAP capability for some time and are really excited to be able to offer SNAP for our customers." said Miller. "As soon as we receive our equipment and become operational, we will announce the official start date."
The Canal Village Farmers' Market (CVFM) is promoting the market as not only an opportunity for the public to shop for fresh-harvested local produce and other products, but also an opportunity to visit the wealth of shops and restaurants in Historic Downtown Medina.
