The Orleans/Niagara BOCES students at the Orleans Learning Center spent a spring day up at Bond Lake in Ransomville recently. The students joined physical education teacher Jeff Hart who had been teaching them over the last several weeks about how to fish. He covered everything from casting, types of bait, types of fishing and other pieces of equipment that are used in class.
"I think they enjoyed the experience despite the fact that it rained. Fishing can be intimidating because of the wide range of fish, equipment, and types of fishing, but I think the students learned a lot and were able to put their new skills to the test," says Mr. Hart. "They also prepped all the rods and lines before the trip as part of the physical education class, so now they know how to go out and fish with their friends and family."
Mr. Hart says he would like express gratitude to the DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) for giving the students permission to fish at Bond Lake for the day. He would also like to thank Paul Jackson from the Niagara River Angler Association, who generously donated his time to come and assist with the field trip. "Paul was great. He came out and gave a presentation with the students and was fantastic with them."
