Press Release

The Medina Teachers Association, Medina Central School District, and the Medina Business Association are proud to announce the November selections for Students of the Month. This award is a joint effort between the three organizations to recognize students who go above and beyond to help teachers and fellow students succeed and enjoy school.

Filomena's Favorites has graciously sponsored the award for November. This month students are being honored with this article, a Certificate of Achievement from the Medina Teachers' Association presented by President Joseph Byrne and Medina CSD Superintendent, Mark Kruzynski, presented a special pen and pencil. In addition, Danette Oakes from Filomena's Favorites presented each student with a $10 Avanti gift card and 2 large chocolate bars.

Nominated by Katie Toub of Oak Orchard was third grader Adrianna Fearby. Mrs. Toub shared that Adrianna is a sweet girl who always tries her best. In addition to working hard, she is an extremely helpful young lady. She is always volunteering to help the teacher and her peers. More importantly Adrianna is a very caring young lady. There is a friend in our classroom this year who struggles with anger issues. When this friend becomes upset most children move away. Not Adrianna. Instead she offers up help to try and make this friend feel better, even trying to engage the friend in conversations about topics that friend is interested in to distract them from what is causing anxiety. This is a skill I seldom see a peer using in a situation like this. The first time I witnessed her doing this I was extremely impressed with the bravery and maturity she was showing.

From Wise Middle School Karen Pane nominated a fourth grade student, Olivia Kujawa. When Mrs. Pane indicated her reasons for nominating Olivia, she shared that on the first day of school she had a student that hid under a table and refused to come out. As she was trying to explain to students what to do with all of their brand new school supplies, Olivia took it upon herself to quietly and respectfully help her frightened classmate follow this directions at the same time she was following them. Olivia has shown great compassion towards the frightened student and has taken him under her wing to help guide him on the many days he struggles to follow along in class. Olivia is a sunny spot in everyone's day. She is always kind and friendly. She can be depended on to work with any of her classmates without complaint. She has a very sunny disposition that rubs off on those around her. She helps make our classroom a happy, emotionally safe place to be.

From the High School, Noah Skinner, an eighth grader, was nominated by Jeff Dole & Darnell Gray. They report that even though we are only a few weeks into school and Noah has left an impression for his dependability and his willingness to help. Everyday there are students in class that borrow calculators to use in class. We have told the students to make sure to turn their borrowed calculator back in. Without asking, Noah makes sure all of the calculators are turned in. He has even stayed after the bell to make sure every calculator has been turned in. In class, Noah often works with a student near him who struggles in class and processes his work at a slower rate than the rest of class. Noah is patient with this student and is always willing to help out if his partner is in need.

Congratulations to this month's winners! The MTA, MCSD, and the MBA will continue the student of the month program throughout the school year. Be on the lookout for the next honorees in the coming months. Look for posters in the windows of Medina businesses identifying them as proud supporters of this program. Who will be the next outstanding Medina student to be honored?
